Assessment FOR Learning

What is Assessment for Learning?
Every teacher needs to start somewhere when teaching a new lesson. Assessment For learning is a great way to see what your students already know and what they need to work on. By doing assessments for learning you will save time and grab all students attention by knowing what you don't need to teach anymore and where you need to spend more time on. This will also allow you to differentiate for students that are above other students so that they wont be bored.

What are some Examples?

One of the easiest way to assess students is by using think-pair-share. With their partner or person sitting next to them they can think first about the topic and then share with each other what they came up with. As they are doing this you (the teacher) is walking around and listening as well as providing feedback or probing questions for students to critical think.

Number Talk -The focus of the 5-10 minute discussion is on all the many ways to solve the problem, rather than on the answer itself. During a number talk, the teacher poses a problem and students share strategies, reflect on others’ strategies, and learn to see math in different ways.

White Boards- Another simple way to assess students understanding is using whiteboards to answer questions. Each students has their own whiteboard and answers the question the teacher asks on it.

3-2-1 Countdown- In pairs students answer : what 3 things you didn’t know before? What 2 things surprised you about this lesson / topic? What is 1 thing you want to start doing with what you have learned? Another way to do this is having each student use Flipgrid to answer the questions.

What EduProtocol can I use? -

Group Brainstorm EduProtocol-For this activity 4 students will be working together to generate ideas silently. Students are
writing down ideas on slide provided by teacher. Students will eventually read ideas of 3 of their
peers and think of more spinoff ideas.

This protocol can be used as an assessment For learning by using it as a concept map of what
students are thinking they know about the topic. This protocol allows for participation from all
students, even the ones who are shy since they wont be brainstorming out loud. By using this
Protocol the teacher can asses where students learning level is.
